Uncommon Sense
By Gerald Drumwright
As an old hippy, I tend to rail against conventionalism. Being a hippy, at least initially, was an expression of dissatisfaction with our parents’ lifestyles and values. Consequently, we experimented with all sorts of alternatives, looking for a more satisfying and fulfilling life. Sadly, most of us became disillusioned, or just weary from the battle, and retreated to the safety and security of our parents' lifestyles.
Conventional success indicators are often defined by image over substance:
Busyness – Rushing to & fro, constantly on the cell phone or laptop or PDA, with apparently little time for socializing.
Trappings – House, car, clothing, office, vacations / leisure
Physical beauty
Unconventional success indicators are often defined by substance over image:
Contentment – Peace with oneself and with one’s place in the world.
Minimal financial stress – Wise use of credit and good balance between income and expenses.
Leisure – Time for contemplation, artistic endeavors, family and friends
Inner beauty
Conventional lifestyles have more to do with image so they are easier to discuss and depict in the media, they are more entertaining, and they are more directly related to advertising objectives, so we are bombarded with messages that reinforce conventional lifestyles.
Perhaps the answer is balance between the extremes of conventionalism and unconventionalism. We each need to find that balance but it is difficult when our peers conspire, often innocently, against us. We are considered odd if we don’t have a credit card or a shiny new automobile.
We are seeing some media exposure for alternate lifestyles, and often these are wildly popular. There is a hunger for more information and positive reinforcement and role models.
One final thought regarding a financially responsible lifestyle. Financial conservatism is more about freedom than frugality. If you have money in the bank you aren’t forced to continue in that job you hate, or you can take advantage of that once in a lifetime investment or business opportunity. You simply have more freedom in the way you live your life.
